The Nassau Thunderbolts Return!

Feb 18, 2022 | Blog, The Nassau Thunderbolts

Due to the Coronavirus pandemic, the Nassau Thunderbolts temporarily shut down in March of 2020.  After a few weeks, we decided we needed to keep things moving forward, so we scheduled zoom meetings for online training and reviewing videos of our own team, other teams and international play.

In September of 2020 the team returned to live training with strict covid protocols – the protocols continue to be followed to ensure the safety of all athletes and coaches

We were gifted with a Nassau County Grant in December of 2020 and we were able to purchase IPAD’s so that remote training and meetings were much easier to access for all. The team continues to use these IPAD’s as an additional training option apart from in-person training.

In August 2021, Daniel Dalton and James Thomson were able to compete in the Regional Championship in Ohio. The competition went well and provided the coaching staff the confidence that we could travel safely during the pandemic.

The National Boccia Championships were held in Kansas during October of 2021. Rafael de Jesus won a Gold Medal in the Individual BC 5 Division. Brian Zacarias/Keith Haarmann/James Thomson won Silver Medals in Team Play. Congratulations to all winners!

Other news around the league includes Charlie Fleisch being named to Team USA Boccia International Squad and Brian Zacarias named to the Team USA Boccia National Squad. The CP Nassau Thunderbolts are so very proud of their teammates being recognized with these distinctions!

Assistant Head Coach Troy McPherson was also named BC 3 Team USA Boccia Coach. He coached in Brazil in December of 2020 for Team USA Boccia.

Charlie Fleisch, William Lowry, Brian Zacarias and Troy McPherson were invited to a camp at Lakeshore Foundation at the end of February 2022 to train with Team USA Boccia.

The New York Mets Baseball Team (Through Charlie F.) granted the Nassau Thunderbolts a $15,000 Equipment Grant for the team to purchase new, internationally certified Boccia Balls.

The team is very appreciative for both recent grants and continues to train towards participating in Nationals in the Summer of 2022.

The Nassau Thunderbolts is a competitive Boccia Team for adults with Cerebral Palsy & other disabilities. Athletes compete Nationally & Internationally.
