Mets Are MVPs at CP Nassau
The New York Mets donated some tickets to students at the Children’s Learning Center at CP Nassau! CLC student Alejandro and his brother attended a game with their family and had a wonderful time!
Life Options participant, Charlie Fleisch contacted the Amazin’ Mets Foundation, the charitable foundation of the organization with a grant request and boy, did they answer!
Charlie is also an athlete on the CP Nassau Thunderbolts Sports Team. The Thunderbolts are a competitive Boccia team that trains at CP Nassau and Charlie requested support for their equipment needs. The grant was awarded to the team earlier this year by the Foundation headed by Alex Cohen, wife of Mets owner Steve Cohen.

On May 11th, three members of the Amazin’ Mets Foundation (Erica, Joe, and Natalie) visited CP Nassau to experience the Thunderbolts in action with a boccia demonstration. The Foundation’s grant of $15,000 to the Thunderbolts earlier this year, enabled the team to purchase new and licensed Boccia balls to fit each athlete’s needs. The new Boccia balls were necessary as BISFED (Boccia International Sport Federation) required licensed balls that the team did not have.
The new balls have already paid dividends because Charlie went to Kansas and won the silver medal in Regionals. The Nassau Thunderbolts along with CP Nassau’s Executive Director Bob McGuire had a small ceremony where the team presented Erica a team shirt. Erica was instrumental in getting the grant. The team also gave Natalie and Joe a thank you gift of framed original art that was done by one of the members of Life Options.
Team athletes Charlie, Brian, Keith, and Rafael then demonstrated Boccia , while Coaches Mary Hodge and Troy McPherson explained the rules, strategy, and nuances of the Game. The members of the Foundation then jumped in and played with members of the Nassau Thunderbolts. Overall, it was an amazing afternoon.
Charlie Fleisch commented: “I am so happy to make this connection with the Mets. The Mets organization has been so generous to CP Nassau from providing Mets Alumni to talk to the participants on Zoom during the height of the Pandemic, to now donating $15,000 to the Nassau Thunderbolts. We are so grateful for this amazing relationship with the Mets.”
